Lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage Systems face unique safety challenges, including the potential to emit toxic fumes if they catch fire. Thermal runaway can trigger rapid, uncontrollable fires that spread quickly and require up to 5 times more water to extinguish than conventional fires, making it a particularly complex hazard to manage and contain.
Conventional fire detection technologies face difficulties in battery storage facilities with multi-storey bays within high, three-dimensional enclosed containers and warehouses. Beam detectors, video flame detection, aspirating systems, and smoke detectors only activate after thermal runaway has occurred.
Using Linear Heat Detection, our state-of-the-art FireLaser DTS Systems can be positioned with the sensing fibre close to the lithium-ion batteries, detecting temperature rises before thermal runaway and smoke emission. This enables early intervention, where a stacker crane can remove the affected battery tray and transport it to an explosion-proof isolation container, minimising the risk of fast-spreading fires.
