Fire Safety Risks of Belt Conveyors
Ranging from a few to several hundred metres in length, with associated equipment such as motors, support structures, rollers, and belting, conveyors are widely used in industries for the bulk transportation of various combustible and non-combustible materials. Fire hazards posed by belt conveyors are often underestimated, yet they can cause significant risks.
Depending on the material transported, fire can accelerate rapidly, resulting in extensive damage. Bearing failures can be expensive in both direct damage costs and downtime required for repair and replacement.
Main fire risks include: friction from loss of belt traction and slipping on the drive roller; welding activities generating hot, molten material; overheated materials placed on the belt; build-up of fallen materials and associated dust cloud generation; and static electricity. Two key types of fire on belt-type conveyors require early detection: static and moving fires. Infrared technology alone is not enough to provide coverage over the entire length.

Current protection systems assume the conveyor belt has reached the combustion stage before raising an alarm. However, our systems can pinpoint the exact location of the thermal increase, enabling action long before a flame ignites, during the pyrolysis stage. If early action is taken, Fire Suppression or cooling measures are much more likely to be effective, minimising damage and containing the fire to a single location.
What’s more, our Fire Detection Systems feature robust cable construction, enabling reliable temperature measurements over very long conveyor lengths. Unaffected by RFI/EMI, they continuously measure the actual temperature, allowing you to predict imminent risk before ignition occurs. Inherently intrinsically safe (EEx ia), they are suitable for use in hazardous areas, with minimal necessity for site control of equipment in remote locations.
